Casemore Kirkeby proudly presents a historical solo presentation of Raised By Wolves by Jim Goldberg, comprised of vintage silver gelatin prints, archival pigment prints, and ephemera. Often considered Jim Goldberg’s seminal body of work, Raised By Wolves collages ten years of photographs, texts, films and installations into an epic narrative of the lives of runaway teenagers in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Working in the liminal space between documentary and narrative fiction, Goldberg invented a visual language crafted from home movie stills, snapshots, drawings, diary entries, audio, film, and his subjects’ discarded belongings that stands at the intersection of the documentary tradition, Californian conceptual art movements of the 1970s, and the emerging subjective storytelling of the 1980s.
Raised By Wolves falls between Goldberg’s projects, Rich and Poor (1977-1983) and Open See (2003-2009). The groundbreaking project stands among the greatest bodies of work in American photography. It has rarely been presented since its original exhibitions at Corcoran and SFMOMA in the mid 1990s. Among the many awards and grants received by Goldberg for Raised By Wolves are a Guggenheim Fellowship (1985), two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1989, 1990), the Mother Jones Documentary Photography Award (1989), and the Ernst Haas Award for Photography Book of the Year (1995).
The book version of Raised By Wolves, described by Goldberg’s contemporary Nan Goldin as “one of the best photo books of my lifetime,” was originally published by Scalo in 1995 and reformulated as a limited edition “Bootleg” in 2016. Casemore Kirkeby, in collaboration with TBW Books, will host a book signing and limited sale of Raised By Wolves (Bootleg) on Saturday, November 9, 4pm, at TBW booth SE21.
In addition, writer and curator, David Campany, will accompany Jim in conversation about the project on Thursday, November 7th, at 1pm located in the auditorium level 1.
